Two arrested in connection with church burglaries
Two Upson County men have been arrested and charged in connection with several thefts and burglaries that occurred earlier this year, including a number of church break-ins. According to a news release from Sheriff Dan Kilgore, Kevin Dean Spivey, 28, of 113 Norris Branch Lane, is charged with theft by taking, criminal damage to property and eight counts of burglary. Total bond has been set at $91,000. Darren Lee Womble, 28 of 145 Willow Road, is charged with theft by taking, criminal damage to property and two counts of burglary. Total is set at bond $41,000.
The theft by taking and criminal damage to property charges deal with an incident that occurred at the Upson Superette, 1038 Atwater Road, between January 25-26, 2013. Both subjects are alleged to have damaged a drink machine and taken money from it.
The burglary counts are as follows:
Two counts on Womble and one count on Spivey. Both subjects entered a barn located on Harrell Road and took numerous tools. Womble went back a second time and took a guitar and an amplifier from the same location by himself. This happened in January of 2013.
First Assembly of God, 205 West County Road. Womble and Spivey broke in to the church and took a debit card, guitar, drum symbol, sound mixer, projector and cash. This occurred between January 30-31, 2013.
Spivey is charged with burglary at First Freewill Church located at 146 Harp Road. Spivey burglarized the church and took a Dell laptop computer.
Spivey is charged with burglary at the Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 1548 Highway 19 North. Spivey burglarized the church and took money between January 19-21, 2013.
Spivey is charged with a second burglary at Antioch United Methodist Church located at 1606 Highway 19 North. Spivey burglarized the church and took cash on January 21, 2013.
Spivey is charged with 2 counts of burglary at the United Pentecostal Church located at 1876 Highway 19 North. Spivey burglarized the church on January 17, 2013 and took a guitar. Spivey burglarized the church a second time between January 20-21, 2013 and took cash.
Spivey is charged with burglary at AA tires, 1772 Highway 19 North. Spivey entered the building searching for money. This incident occurred between January 20-21, 2013.
Spivey is charged with burglary at a residence on Fallin Road. He entered the residence and took a Playstation game machine, digital camera, laptop computer, Playstation games, and a 9mm handgun. This occurred between May 13-14, 2013.
“I applaud the efforts of my deputies and investigators on these cases,” Sheriff Kilgore said. “Burglary, especially church burglary, is a priority offense for us. We have worked many hours to bring this case to closure and i am pleased that these cases were solved.”
