When I sat down to write this column, I knew I wanted it to be something about love, seeing as today is Valentine’s Day. However, I could not decide exactly what it was about the feeling that I wanted to write about, that is until I came across a quote by author Gene Hill which said, “No one can fully understand the meaning of love, unless he has owned a dog.” I knew then, that when it comes to writing about love, there is no better subject than the sweet little doggie who I call Izzy.

When it comes to love, it is often said that you just know if someone is the right one for you. Well, I think that theory can be applied to pets as well and the story of how I came to meet Izzy proves that very fact. Before I met her, I had spent about a month looking up dogs on Petfinder.org and local shelter websites, as I knew I wanted to adopt a dog that needed a home. There were several dogs that I thought would be a perfect fit, but when I called to inquire about them and possibly setting up a meeting, I was told that particular one had already been adopted. Each time I was heartbroken because I just knew those were meant to be my dog.

Then one day my sister called to tell me to look at the website of a place called Coco’s Cupboard that is in Pike County, because a lady she worked with said they might have the type of dog I was looking for. I was beginning to get skeptical, but figured it did not hurt to look. As I was scrolling through the photos, I came across a little black Schnauzer mix with a small trace of white on her chest that was just the cutest thing! I knew I had to meet her, but was a little nervous since things had not worked out before. However, I pushed that thought to the back of my mind and set up a time to visit her two days later on Saturday. While talking to the lady on the phone, she told me several people had already called about Izzy and were coming to see her that day as well and she hoped she would be a good fit for one of us. While I wasn’t too excited about having some competition, I prayed that if she was meant to be mine, she would still be there.

When I finally made it that morning to the group home she was living in, the lady at the front desk told me I was the first person there to see her today. I was extremely happy to hear that and hoped things would still go good when they brought her out. When they walked her to the room I was waiting in with my mama, sister and nephew, I wondered what she would do. Thankfully she ran right up to me and excitedly greeted me, never leaving my side. I knew right then without a shadow of a doubt that she was the right dog for me and I was the right human for her. I guess you could call it puppy love at first sight!

We celebrated being together one year last Sunday, February 9, and it has been an interesting year to say the least. I’ve come to find out that she likes to try my patience some nights when she barks at me for sitting down; not because she wants to play or go out, just because she thinks I should be standing up instead of sitting on the couch. She has conned me into giving her more of my dinner than I ever intended and recently decided to destroy my favorite pair of fuzzy socks for no reason at all. But, I figure if she still happy to see me after leaving her alone for much of the day, not going on a walk some evenings because it is too cold and stepping on her tail when she gets tangled under my feet, then the least I can do is forgive her of her little annoyances as well. We still love each other, no matter what, and isn’t that what love is about after all?
