The latest information on the weather and closings:
Latest on the weather from Upson EMA:
Well, National Weather Service (NWS) has moved away from 2 distinct events and now are calling this one event lasting from now until Thursday morning.
The projections are for our area to see lots of ‘mix’ - mostly a cold rain, some sleet and freezing rain mixed in. Our ‘ace in the hole’ will be that temperatures are not expected to drop below the freezing mark until overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. The rain soaked trees and power lines will begin to feel the brunt of our storm then, as winds will likely bring trees down across power lines. The icing event will be our big impact.
As NWS stated at the beginning of the Webinar, if you have not already began preparing for this winter storm, you should start NOW.
We will have shelter operations on standby, ready to open a designated shelter if the need arises. Our Emergency Operations Center is monitoring the weather, and will open this evening and be open for the duration of the storm.
For persons that rely on medical equipment, ensure that you have an adequate supply of supplemental oxygen, or ensure that you have the resources in place to relocate to relatives that might have power should yours go out. I’m not telling all these persons to go out an buy a generator, but that is a solution to your problem that can be achieved rather quickly and simply. You’ll need additional fuel, though, to keep its motor running to supply your power needs.
Updates will be posted as they become available.
