During the ceremony last April when the West Georgia Generating Facility in Thomaston was renamed the Edward L. Addison Generating Plant, Thomaston Mayor Hays Arnolds stated in his remarks that it would also be fitting for the city to rename Yamaha Parkway in honor of Addison. Those remarks came to fruition Tuesday night as the Thomaston City Council voted 4-0 in favor of remaining Yamaha Parkway as Edward L. Addison Parkway.
Addison worked for more than 40 years for Southern Company and served as its chief executive from 1983 to 1995. During his tenure the construction of the first nuclear units at Plant Vogtle were completed and Savannah Electric was acquired.
Representing Georgia Power at the council meeting Tuesday were Plant Manager Mike Moro, Regional Manager Mike Casey from Birmingham, Ala., and attorney Ronald Barfield. Casey told the council it is a great honor to have the road renamed.
“We think the world of Thomaston,” said Casey. “Obviously, by you doing this and renaming the road in his honor tells us how much you think about us and we really appreciate that and this action and the honor you’ve bestowed upon him and our company.”
Moro stated he is glad for the relationship the city and Southern Company have with each other.
“We’re very glad to be in the City of Thomaston,” said Moro. “A lot of the guys call it home. I call it home. We just enjoy being part of the community and being able to participate. Whether it is a council meeting or the poker float, we just enjoy being here.”
Barfield said the partnership between the city and Southern Company has proven to beneficial to everyone.
“We appreciate you working with them and cooperating with them the way you do,” said Barfield. “We appreciate this occasion and the name of the parkway for this gentleman.”
“Speaking on behalf of the entire council,” replied Mayor Arnold, “that cooperation and partnership has been greatly appreciated, both by the citizens of Thomaston, as well as this council.”
Council member Patsy Perdue made a motion to approve the resolution remaining Yamaha Parkway to Edward L. Addision Parkway. Council member Gary Atwater seconded the motion and it was approved 4-0.
