Events to benefit Alzheimer’s research
West Georgia Health’s Medical Information department’s “Memory Makers” currently are holding a $2-ticket raffle to win $100, team “Happy Happy Happy” will hold a bake sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in front of the cafeteria and Vernon Woods will be hosting a “Taste of the Woods” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 14. Events support the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Vernon Woods Retirement Community at 9 a.m. on Sept. 21. Donations sought for church yard sale
Saint Peter’s Catholic Church hosts its annual yard sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at 200 Lafayette Parkway. Furniture, housewares, collectibles, baby boutique, sporting equipment, linens and more will be on sale. Donations of the items listed above will be accepted at 200 LaFayette Parkway.
Group seeking support for homeless veterans

Registration open for 13th annual Leggin’ it for Literacy
Troup CLCP hosts the 13th annual Leggin’ It for Literacy 5K at 9 p.m. on Oct. 19 and registration is open now on Active.com or registration forms may also be found at and turned into Country’s Barbecue at 124 Vernon St. Cost to register is $20 per person for a limited time, and until Sept. 30 on Active.com. The race entry includes a Country’s Barbecue sandwich, sweet tea, glow bracelet and performance shirt. Volunteers sought for WP Lake cleanup
The West Point Army Corps of Engineers is recruiting for the annual lake cleanup, set for Sept. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. About 1,000 volunteers are needed to cleanup West Point Lake shoreline. Volunteers with pontoon boats also are needed to ferry volunteers to cleanup sites. The cleanup will be and lunch will be provided afterwards at Pyne Road Park for volunteers courtesy Wendy’s on Lafayette Parkway. Merry Market seeking sponsors
United Way of West Georgia is seeking sponsors for its third annual Merry Market scheduled for Oct. 24-26 at at Callaway Conference Center. The “shopping extravaganza” brings unique and specialty merchants from different states to LaGrange for an early holiday shopping event to shop with a purpose – to fund expansion of early learning programs in Troup County. Center seeking donations for clothes, money
The Yolanda Jabaley Clothing Center is in need of children’s clothes and clothes for teenagers. Money donated to the center is used to buy new underwear and shoes. Hours of the center are 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March through May. Care baskets for breast cancer patients
The Troup County breast cancer support group, Breast Friends for Life, is in need of new or gently used baskets. BFFL makes gift baskets for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Baskets need to have a handle. No Christmas or Easter baskets. Baskets may be dropped off with Wanda Lowe at Enoch Callaway Cancer Center, 111 Medical Drive next to West Georgia Health. Grace for Children seeking foster parents
Grace for Children Foster Care is recruiting for new foster parents. Homes are needed for children ages birth to 18 years old, and especially for sibling groups and teenagers. Local raising money for diabetes research
Polly Griesbach, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 2, is raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund by running in the Walt Disney World Marathon on Jan. 12, 2014. Her goal is to raise $2,750 for the 26.2-mile run. Donations for the fund can be made on her behalf at www2.jdrf.org/goto/runwithmickey
